I feel like the ultimate idiot posting this, but I was hoping for suggestions for temp agencies in the city that have a lot of work and take people from diverse backgrounds (i.e, no experience as a admin assistant etc).
I do have a college degree and graduate degree and I've worked in many types of jobs (mainly education and science) However, even when I have posted my resume or called temp agencies they state that they cannot use my skills and that they are looking for people with 2 yrs experience as an admin or executive assistant. Alternatively they look at my prior jobs and tell me that they do not need teachers but I was hoping on using temp agencies not just for money but as a chance to explore other careers.
Surely students in college, right out of college, or non previous exec assistants have successfully worked as a temp in the city, so rather than banging my head against the wall I was hoping for the names of companies that may have worked well for you or would fit with my background.
Suggestions may be helpful too - i.e., take the graduate degree of my resume?
Thanks

Susan,
TEmp agenices are not fun to work with-I am learning this myself. I am starting a new career, and even though I have business experijence(not administrative) and I have a diploma in my new area, getting experience and that first job is very tough. I do have a temporary job thru an agency, but my degree as a paralegal is the position they were trying to fill. I am not happy with the work, but it is work in my new field while I look for something permanent-and that isn't easy either.
Keep in mind, they have positions to fill, and you have to have an idea of at least a general career area you think you are interested in. Then you can try to position yourself within that area. Also try to make your resume appear you have a direction in mind. They want to know you are serious and know what you want-they are not there to help you make up your mind. Trust me I have had alot of expereince losing and finding jobs and dealing with human resources and now temp agencies-and some are much better than others.
Does any of this help? I hope so.
Lorrie

Try Adecco, Kardon, Tiger Information Services, RJL...those are a few I have used or still use. They are good people and have more than just Admin positions. Hope this helps....but the amount of work is based on the companies they support needing people.
And you can teach yourself the admin skills. I have some great books that I used. If you are interested, then maybe we can set up something where we can talk and maybe I can help you out if you want to learn some of the admin skills that jobs look for. I taught myself and kinda embellished my experience time for the first job I got. If you feel comfortable with the skills, you can do most admin type jobs...
But there are so many more than just admins. There are research assistants, not just medical, but someone who can navigate the Internet. There are receptionists, front desk assitants for doctors offices (answering phones, scheduling appointments), personal assistants who do more than just office work, they can run errands and stuff too, all sorts of different levels and you can learn from each one.

I don't know how good monster.com is for those in NYC, but I've had some good experience with posting my resume on there. I've had people contact me. Also, have you tried craigs list? Sounds crazy, but the job postings for where I live have been pretty good also. Just some "outside the box" thoughts.

Since you're in education, why don't you try working for Sylvan? Always looking for tutors there.

Veritude is the in-house temporary agency for Fidelity. It is a great place to work.
Check out the web site and follow thru weekly after you post your resume.
Good luck.
