I'm thinking of heading out on Saturday to do some flatwater kayaking. I'm a novice, so I'm not looking for anything too intense. I've been looking at the Thompson Boat Center (http://www.thompsonboatcenter.com/boatrent.htm) for this trip. $8/hr or $24/day rates don't seem too bad. Anyone interested in joining me?

Interesting, I didn't know there was kayaking around here. This Saturday I have plans but it would be fun to get a group together and go sometime.

I'm planning to do something EVERY weekend until its too cold to go out. Hiking, biking, kayaking, white water rafting, etc. I'll post upcoming plans here frequently.

Aren't there some good Kayaking places on the Potomac River in DC? That sounds pretty cheap. Though, I fear of the kayak tipping over :(

Dean,

I'll be honest, I've never been kayaking. I have, however, been boating, canoeing, etc. I don't believe that kayaks are prone to tipping over (not on their own, or in flat water). I think everyone has seen pictures and video of people flipping over in white water, and then righting the kayak again. If you're in white water, obviously you need to know how to flip the kayak upright again. If this is your goal (and it is eventually mine) then there are classes given regularly. Here's one source of classes:

I plan to eventually take some classes, but I also just want to get out and do some simple flat-water kayaking. I have no concerns about the kayak just "flipping over" on its own, but I can respect that you and many others have this concern.

This weekend is definitely a "water" weekend! It's too hot to NOT hit the water. So, who's up for some sort of water fun? Kayaking, white-water rafting, jet skis (if I can find some reasonable rentals)? Let's get something going ASAP! I'd like to firm up some plans by Wednesday or Thursday, leaving time to make final arrangements. I'm planning on going out Saturday... so, everyone get back to me!

Randy-
yeah, I definitely agree it's a water weekend considering the heatwave. Best if I not go because in my attempt to be wet, I'm likely to tip the canoe over in order to get wet :)

But hey, anyone here can join me for Thursday DC Foodies Meetup in Falls Church. See the sig for more info. We're having vietnamese this time. Yummy.

ooo.... if you do a jet ski event, I would be so in! I always wanted to try that.
As for the kayaking.... I will pass. I did that once out in the ocean and got myself sea sick. =o(

Actually, jet skiing is also on my "to do" list. I've found some rentals way down in Lake Anna, but its not going to be cheap. I also plan to check for rentals out on the Chesepeake. I'll post info here as I dig it up. Since I didn't get any takers for kayaking this weekend, I just did a short hike back at the Billy Goat Trail. It's always a good destination for a short but challenging local hike. :)
