Well, the Met is pay what you like, a lot of people don't realize that. Other than that, most museums have one day a week that is either free or pay what you want. Just check out the websites for details.

As for show tickets, if you can do same day tickets and don't mind standing in line, your best best is the TKTS booth at 47th and Broadway. They sell remaining seats to most of the shows at a deep discount (25-50%). However, they only take cash and traveler's checks, so be prepared. If you'd like to plan ahead a bit, join the members club on playbill.com. They also have good offers on tickets.

www.hitshowclub.com (http://www.hitshowclub.com/) not only offers deep pocket discounts, but they also offer combination events. For example, they sometimes have bus rides to other cities like Washington D.C. that include a ticket to a show, the bus ride, shopping opportunities and even a overnight stay at a hotel.

A person can join for free and receive weekly specials.

When I want to see a specific show, I'll pay full price, but when I'm just walking by and think, 'maybe I should see a show..." Here's my advice: show up 5 minutes before the show starts and say "do you have any standing seating available?" (usually $20, depending on whether or not the theatre has a standing section) or "do you have any student tickets?" (usually $35 or less; and they accept any form of student ID - even a recently-printed ID from your Canon printer...). If the above two suggestions don't work, ask them for the cheapest ticket. It is important that they sell every ticket possible, so you can usually bargain with them... (you'd never guess you can bargain with the dude in the ticket booth, but you can...)

try audienceextras.com

otherwise I am a member and I can get two tickets to shows for $3.00. If you are interested let me know. I am also new to the city and looking for people to hang with.
