Jared,
You can always try going classic ... personal favorites are Henry James and the Brontes. Henry James can get a little dull sometimes but boy can he mess with somebody's mind!

No, they don't have superpowers but there is a crazed half witch in Jane Eyre, but it's more like a tragic love story so I suppose that wouldn't do either. Have you read Stoker's Dracula or Shelley's Frankenstein?

OK, not a book, but there's a cool miniseries from England that's out here now on DVD. It's called Ultraviolet and it updates the basic Vampire story, but it makes them into sort of a mafia.
Really well writ and acted. I think Kim's Video carries it.

I am personally a fan of Anne Rice's vampire universe, myself...Lestat!

I second Neverwhere, especially if you know London at all--it's my favorite Neil Gaiman (apart from the Sandman, of course).

"Neverwhere" is kind of lovely, but if you're talking Gaiman's books, I'll take "American Gods" any day. On the subject of "supernatural thrillers", though, I just got done reading a pretty good one by a guy named Christopher Golden, called "The Boys Are Back In Town". There was also a book I read awhile back by the former cyberpunk writer John Shirley, "Demons", which as I recall was kinda cool.

I'm still plowing through the Sandman books. Neverwhere is great and more of a 'supernatural thriller' book than American Gods (and that's what the people here are asking for) - anyone familiar with Harrods (http://www.harrods.com/) will never think of Knightbridge in the same way again...
However, I agree Gods is definitely the better book overall.

of course, there's always hp lovecraft. the best review of his writing says "lovecraft's philosophy is simple: man is lucky to be ignorant, because if he knew the truth it would either destroy him or drive him mad."

Celtic mythology. Very creepy.

In college I used to play a Role Playing Game based on Lovecraft called "Call of Cthulu". It was always fantastic, but the best thing was introducing new players who were used to other RPGs. In your typical Conan-the-Barbarian-meets-the-Fellowship-of-the-Ring RPG, experienced players are used to whipping out their weapons as soon as the bad guys make their appearance. When playing Call of Cthulu, it was always fun to hear the new guy say "I grab my shotgun..." and to watch his face when the Game Leader said "Roll to see if you go insane first."
Angels and Demons, Dan Brown 1st book to the DaVinci Code.
American Gods, Neil Gaiman
As for Vampires and something of that variety, can't help you.

Neverwhere is a great book. If you haven't read it...do.
Other 'supernatural' type of thrillers for the summer that I would recommend...
The Shadow of the Wind (mysterious ghostly forces in post WWII Barcelona)
Sunshine (interesting twist on the modern vampire tale)
Brimstone (not challenging but a great quick summer read)
The Woman in White (a true thriller -- one of the best and very first!)
The Club Dumas (ignore the crap film adaptation 'The 9th Gate' - this is a fun read)
Foucoult's Pendulum (conspiracy theory, satanism, international intrigue - this book has it all and, typical Eco, sometimes a bit too much. But worth the effort!)

I just finished reading The Historian, by Elizabeth Kostova, and its great. A very thorough search for Dracula, taking place in 3 decades. Some people compare it to The Da Vinci Code because of all the detailed descriptions of places and documents, but I've never read that so I couldn't say that for sure.
