I'm a novice to jazz. I've been to Cleopratra's Needle on 90th Street, off of second, so far, and would'nt mind checking out a few new places. Can you recommend any?

On my current trip out here (I'm from CA), I've been to the Blue Note (3 times), The Bar Next Door, and Iridium. These places aren't cheap (TBND was ok), but some of the jazz was incredible-- esp. Les Paul at Iridium-- unbelievable.
How was Cleopatra's?

Hi Alan; I've been to Cleopatra's Needle, twice. From my reference point, I found the ensemble to be pretty engaging. The first time I went, I was on a date with a gentlemen that happens to be a jazz musician (trumpet) and music teacher, so he was very helpful in making inference to the recurring themes, and familiar tunes from other music. I was able to appreciate the music very much. The second time, I was with a friend who was not familiar with improvisational jazz and she seem to enjoy it as well. They also serve middle-eastern cuisine, which goes pretty nicely with the name of the establishment.
Send me a line when your're in town again, perhaps we can check out a new club or ensemble.

Alan Holdsworth !
I am not sure if I will be in NY in Mid-May... If I am, I will definitively go to that concert. The following was copied from the Iridium Wesite:
Alan Holdsworth is widely regarded by fans and contemporary musicians as one of the 20 th century's most prominent guitarists. He is one of a handful of musicians who has consistently proven himself as an innovator in between and within the worlds of rock and jazz music. Many of music's best-known instrumental masters cite Holdsworth as that rare and shining voice—a legendary player who continues to push the outer limits of instrumental technique and the electric guitar's range of tonal and textural possibilities.
Particularly during the 90s, Holdsworth has enjoyed the recognition so many musicians strongly feel he deserves, given that he has developed his career outside the big label mainstream and has consistently produced his own recordings with complete creative control since the mid-80s. Despite the uncompromising nature of Holdsworth's predominantly genre-defying solo projects, he's no stranger to all-star jazz festival line-ups or large venue rock audiences. Musician Magazine placed Holdsworth near the top of their “100 greatest guitarists of all time.” There's never been a shortage of media attention or acclaim for Holdsworth's accomplishments and originality. An inductee of Guitar Player ...

count me in! i'm new to the lunch club, but have been intrigued by this place for a while.
i noticed in addition to holdsworth, who is amazing, that larry coryell will be there april 15th with victor bailey and lenny white. coryell is another astounding guitarist, and lenny white is a legendary drummer. it would probably be a modern jazz/fusion thing, which is what tickles my fancy [vs. pure straight-ahead jazz, though i like that, too]. yellowjackets will be there in june. they're also modern/fusion-y.
i'll check back in to see if you guys are planning to hook up for any of these events. i'm particularly interested in the coryell show.
cheers!

BTW, did you go to the Bruford concert at Iridium a few Months ago? If so, how was it ? I could not make it... may be he is not your style of drummer...

i didn't see the bruford show, but i have seen him, many, many times before with earthworks [several times at the montreal jazzfest, in fact]. plus i was a huge yes fan growing up, so also checked him out then. [actually, i posed as a reporter once so i could meet and interview him. lol]. he's very different and unique in a jazz context, and i don't know if his sax player, iain bellamy, is still with him, but he's an amazing player.
i definitely was a bruford and neil peart-head for a long time; now i'm into a whole bunch of other drummers. i really dig gary husband, smitty smith and lately, i've been listening to a ton of early phil collins with brand x...when he actually played drums.

Looks like we agree on most drummers...
Actually I am from Montreal (you can tell by the quality of my written english) and I am been to most of the Jazz Fest for the last 20 years - You can make some very good discovery over there, since there are plenty of free concerts.
I saw Eartworks as well - Big part of the crowd was actually musicians. I met the UZEB guys at the concert (probably the best Jazz-fusion band in Quebec at this time) and they were simply amazed by the work of Earthworks.
Concerning Collins I would also had that his very early work with Genesis was pretty good as well. During that period, Collins and Bruford had similar style and that is the reason Bruford accepted to tour with Genesis - followed by Chester Thomson... another interesting one.
If you ever come back to Mtl for thr Jazz Fest we should get in touch - Most of the time I have good info for the late last-minute improvised jam session late at night.
